NO problems???

I just found out my God Damned ATTO raid card won't work with Tyan dual mobos, so I guess I shouldn't be so pissed.

Congrats, glad it worked for you

Congratulations. You have now almost certainly voided your warranty on both of your processors as well as your motherboard.

All in the quest to save an amount that compared to the cost of a dually workstation 5 years ago is negligible. Furthermore the performance of your machine is significantly less than what it would be if you used processors actually tested/validated for SMP operation.

Question? What are the  cpus approved for dual use?
Last time I checkec, only 1 ghz, or 1.2 ghz Palaminos, in matched pairs.

All Athlon MP's, and ONLY MP's...available up to I believe the 1800+ (1.533GHz)

Athlon MP = Athlon XP

Athlon MP = Athlon XP

Physically yes, they're the same chip. However, to the marketing and legal departments, they're not.

You use the Athlon MP in SMP, you're kosher. Use the XP in SMP and you've violated your warranties on all three of the parts -- board and both processors. You won't qualify for technical support.

Actually, I technically voided the warantee whe I first installed the first T-bird.
The tiger MP supports only MP processors, period.

In single or dual configurations.

Furthermore the performance of your machine is significantly less than what it would be if you used processors actually tested/validated for SMP operation.

That, I believe, is a myth.

The performance is less than the XP's/Duals not just much because of Mesi versus Mersi, but because of Automated Hardware Prefetch, larger TLB's, and the like.  That makes the Palamino's faster in sinlge configurations as well as dual.

If they work, there is no reason why they shouldn't work as well as matched processors.  Unless I am mistaken somehow.

A matched set of processors is merely a few CPU's that someones tested to see if they work together, much like what I just did.  The only real difference is they have the rubber stamp to certify it so that they will be supported, and that they often have the same stepping number and close serial #'s.

Mine aren't even of the same stepping.

I WIN!

others have had to go through 4-5 chips to get two that work.

YOU are the lucky bitch.

Indeed!

Though I didn't know the probablility of failure was that much, even looking through the 2cpu.com forums.

Well.  My Machine Roxors!

My Machine Roxors!

Depends on what you use it for. I personally would have gone with dual MP 1800's or better, 2GB of PC2100, and all SCSI drives and opticals, on a board with 64bit/66MHz PCI slots, whenever they're released; so that the SCSI RAID array I assembled would have more of a chance of maximum throughput.
