Wireless Networking

Today I got my shipment of NETGEAR wireless network cards. This is the most fun I've had in ages

These things are so neat (and so cheap at cdw.com) that I'm going to have to get some for home now :) Finally my computers won't be limited to the reach of the 24 port hub anymore

Easy to setup too. I LOVE that. w00t!

This has been Spam. Enjoi.

It's not spam, it's informational.

You using a specific base station with that setup?

Running all NETGEAR stuff. It is a damn dream.

PLUS! My 2 iPaq 3760's came today! My world = RAWKED. (they have the PC card expansion and Wireless cards you see  )

You'll get a better performance if you replace the hubs with switches.

Maybe i should do that instead of having the 50ft cable running down the hall, tripping me up all the time.

True, but I'm talking about my house there. I canna afford no switches

The only work problem I'm having is this stuck-up Compaq card not wanting to play nice on the airwaves. It can't find anything, even though it should all be setup fine. I dislike this turn of events. More news later. mm mmm good!

Can anyone name anything Compaq has done well for the world, other than the original reverse engineering of the IBM PC?

I can think of at least one series of things they did that was an absolute crime.

Buying the Alpha from DEC, doing jack shit with it, and then selling it to Intel, who will do even less, in favor of IA-64.

For that they should be tortured until they're broken, and then flayed alive. Damn their oily hides.

Well, their iPaqs are pretty wicked. And sadly, since NETGEAR stuff doesn't appear to mesh with Pocket PC 2002 I had to go with the Compaq cards just for them. The trouble appears to be related to the WEP setup. Apparently there's the right way to do pitiful 40 bit encryption, and the "Compaq" way...

They're still freaking neat

Links and details about these wireless network cards!!!!

I like wireless networking too. The only wire we'd need is the wire for the ADSL/DSL/Cable modem. Beyond that wireless does FUCKING ROOL!!!!!!!
I hate crimping ehternet cables and I hate having t wire up the office, especially if a cable gets damaged somehow.

I actually got rather proficient at crimping Cat-5 in my internship over the summer.

I think I will one day try wireless.

Wireless? I fucking *hate* you ATM.

Prick.

I got cat5 coming out of my ass right now, and yea, it hurts. :)

How's the speed on those mofo's?

It should be 11mbps (with an overhead of 1mbps for whatever reason). That does depend on the signal strength though. I'm not sure how these wireless solutions are with handling more then a couple of computers at the same time.

11mbps .. hmm, that aint too bad at all, considering it's over ze airwaves.

Not great for transferring huge files, but good enough for some minor lanning.

Hmm, how much do they generally run? ( PCMCIA and I assume you need a base stand to hook up into the cable right? )

The dealy-o:

The PC cards are ~70, the PCI adapters ~45, and the base station around 140.

Oddly enough, the same parts from the Netgear site cost double or worse. I don't get it, but who really cares :)

The base station says it can handle from 30-70 PCs, depending on packet load (30 PCs running Q3 would probably suck balls, but this is a library, so we don't worry about that... much  )

Speed is great since the place isn't really huge, so I'm just gonna use a couple stations here at the main building and 1 each for the branches. This also leaves me with something on the order of 5-8 10/100 autosensing switches that I'm sure will find a way to my house

as for signal stregnth, they auto negotiate their speed to ensure connection quality, going all the way down to 1Mb/s if things really suck. To be honest, I think 1Mb/s would really suck too, but I guess it's be connected at least, heh.

One little thing about the Access Points: be CERTAIN not to let them sit on carpet or a stack of papers. I had one sitting on my desk admist some papers and it got so hot it refused to link up to the network  I just hope very much that it "comes back to life" after it cools. I ph34r it being broken. So much sadness!

One day you're going to pick up a newspaper and read about cancer clusters and wireless networking.
I remember long time ago when the Airport first came out. Some guy hacked away at the airport to make it work with a mile radius. Talk about insta-cancer...
