Ad homs vs. a profitable site

Hi

I have a couple questions on ad homs, and how they impact different sites.

I've been posting in a forum, not at ars, where we had prior been pretty much no ad homs, with trolls sorted out.

Now, a certain ad hom type has managed to not only fire personal attacks, but, managed to bring in the
moderators, and owners, to do the same sort of thing.

This seems to have stopped the free flow of ideas.

I was wondering if you knew if such forums decline, or increase in hits.  In other words,
does the allowing of ad homs decrease the number of hits on a website, or increase it?

Thanks

Increase in hits only if they're funny ad homs, a la Paul Hill.

Or just downright friggan brutal. :)

Ad homs just fuck up a good posting experience IMHO, nothing can be accomplished, nothing is learned. It's all BS.

Shoot the fuckers.

While I approve of the sentiment, 3000 mile shots are a little long, even for me.

Just wondering if it's going to be destructive to the number of hits, and affect the business the place does.

Socrates: It very well may lower the hits. Not many people enjoy being slammed or insulted. I myself don't, and that's why I frequent less boards. However, I find the level of insults on this board to be very educational, and I find that it stimulates my masochistic streak. :)

I'd start warning/banning the worst offenders, make it very clear that you will not stand for that type of postings, and if it persists, more bannings shall ensue.

If you don't already, perhaps a registration policy that is enforced strictly may aid in stopping that.

Dunno, just throwing out ideas. But, if you don't want that behaviour, stop it, and stop it quickly.

This site is nice, Deathe, because it's so wide open.

I find it a bit odd that we have stabilized with a few people, and only one person has managed to so push the envelope of decency that JR banned him.

It's kind of nice to be able to say fuck, and whatever, but it's funny that we haven't been doing that here much of late.

I guess it's one of those things that looses it's appeal, once nobody cares about it.

I like the small grouping we have here.

:rolleyes:APK:rolleyes: and his second identity, :rolleyes:APK1:rolleyes:.

That was a low point in OSY history; made for some funny threads, though.

I do too.

APK was a real low point.  I thought I could be gross, but that picture was well beyond any redeming social value.
