I ordered this just a few hours ago and it should be here by wednesday.

It has dual socket A with dual channel IDE (up to 4 devices)

Up to 3Gigbytes Registered DDR PC2100 (4 slots)

AMD-760 MP chipset
AMD-762 North bridge & AMD-766 South bridge
Winbond W83627HF Super I/O ASIC

No Fusking VIA (which incidently fusked up my Win2k partition twice in the past week through data corruption in the security necessitating reinstalls)

One AGP slot supports 2x/4x modes
Four 64-bit and two 32-bit 33MHz (5-volt) PCI slots (v2.2 compliant)

I ordered 256 MB Crucial Registered PC2100 DDR Ram

Only 256MB of RAM? It's so cheap; I'd have gone with at least half a gigabyte; if not a full gigabyte. Some apps just run much smoother.

More details on the rig itself; not just the mobo.

Also in this system:

I shall use that Antec case that is the same as Alienware uses along with this Motherboard.

I already have a Thunderbird 1.2 gig @266fsb, I shall try to aquire another soon enough.

I shall also add my New Radeon All-in-Wonder and Santa Cruz sound card.

It shall have my 40gig seagate Barracuda II 7200rpm

Also, an IDE TDK VeloCD 12x/32x burner.

I shall consider more memory, as it's only $42per 256 Dimm

I also am trying to aquire a DVD player from the Agora Classifieds.

Later shall come firewire and a 21inch monitor.

Software shall include Office XP which I have aquired for the lofty sum of $35

TrueSpace 4 also (which cost me $550)

Windows2000 Pro

and More......

Personally, I won't be building another system until either "Clawhammer" K8, or "Northwood" P4 533MHz FSB is out.

But if I were going to build a new system, I'd use a board with a 760MPX chipset (64bit/66MHz PCI), a pair of AthlonMP 1800+ (1533MHz), a gig or two of Registered ECC DDR, and an all-SCSI subsystem; not sure on which components exactly.

Tyan is my favorite motherboard maker. Also, they are the only one that is a USA company. I need to find someone to buy my old Tiger 100, which is like your motherboard's great grand daddy.

What type of Mobo is the Tiger 100?

why not try selling it on Agora?

Socrates

Sat Oct 13 02:06:38 2001

Oh my, cancel quickly.

The processors HAVE to be in ordered pairs, and are avaliable in only 1 ghz and 1.2 ghz.  These are palaminos,
designed for dual processor boards, and the 1.2 and 1.4
single amd processors are NOT APPROVED BY TYAN, AND WILL NOT WORK.  Or at least, that's what they said.
Great idea, but the processors are expensive right now, because they are in demand.

I would love to do what you are trying to do.

As long as his is a Athlon MP, he's fine. Also the new Athlon XP's should work too.

Sat Oct 13 02:26:48 2001

Duffman:
I actually checked into this, when a month after I bought the asus 1.4 gig athlon, they came out with the Tyan Tiger.

The processors, at the time I checked, where avaliable only in pairs, and for a premium price, and they are Palaminos, not the 1.2 and 1.4 gig processors that you buy for a single processor machine.

I called tyan, and their tech support told me that AMD wanted them to offer the processors in pairs, and only those processors would work.

I had my tech guy check, and the processors where expensive,
like 170 each, or more, and I felt I couldn't afford the cost of switching over, much as I would love to have a 64 bit slot to take advantage of my ATTO U3 board, and the raid 0 attached to it.

Things may have changed since then, but, better safe then sorry.

One other minor factor that adds heavily to the cost.

Check the power supply requirements for this beast.  The original Thunder required a trick, shitty, 460 watt supply.

I suspect you are going to need in the range of a 400 watt power supply, at least, to feel safe.  I went with the antec
430, and I'm glad I did.  I have only one processor.

AMD's website is a good place to find what they recommend with their stuff.

They say that for the PIII boards too. Not only does it have to be the same speed, it has to be the same rev.
Anywhooo... I'm pretty sure you can go into the bios and change some settings incase by default the mobo IS designed to handle nothing less then 2 chips.

AYB!!!! I HATE J0000!!!!!!!
No i don't but i like what you're going to make. Shall i suggest you call your new pc the "Dual Headed Poopy Monster!!!!"

Yay!!!!

AllYorBaseRBelong2Us

Sat Oct 13 03:23:45 2001

Well, The PS won't be a problem for the Tiger, unlike the Thunder.

As far as CPU's Firingsquad is using a tiger in conjuction with Thunderbirds and Spitfires, and it seems to work for them.

?????????????????????????

Well, the vendor has already shipped my order (damn dependable assholes! ;) )

THey said I could refuse the shipment and therefore get no restocking fee (minus the cost of shipping)

But I think I'm going to go forward with this.

The reason why Tyan claims MP processors are needed may be because AMD only officially support SMP with MP's.  ANd as such are bound to pass on the mantra.

I'm looking over at the forums over at 2Cpu for more info.

I've also posted over on Ars. I'm not going to provide a link there because you all should know where Arstechnica is.

Kevin
Let me know if they have it running with dual athlon 1.4's.

I'm going to be really pissed, because I really wanted that
64 bit pci slots, and, I would love to have a dual, for doing stuff like transfering Mandrake iso's, and still being able to use the computer. etc.

IF it so happens that I can't get dual T-birds to work, Morgans can be had for well under $100

But so-far, it looks like T-birds will work, even in unmatched pairs seem to work (as long as they are of same spec.

Most complain that they "don't work right" citing lesser performance by SMP T-birds than Palamino's, yet they forget that Single proc MP's have an IPC advantage over the older T-bird core through encancements like Automated Pre-fetch and larger TBL's etc.

This thing is still going to rock!

plus I will be riding myself of Via!

Sat Oct 13 18:49:06 2001

Yes yes yes, but we still do not know who this kevin is.
And besides I quoted socrates incase he might do that... so nee na nee na nee na!!!!!

So who the fuck is this kevin? Sounds like he was addressing AYB as kevin. But AYb isn't kevin. At ars he's johnson, and his real name isn't kevin either. Unless there is someone else emailing me that pretending to be AYb over here.  SHIT!!!! I've been telling this guy over email all about my poopy fantasis and all he does in reply is smam my email box. LOL!!! I got more emails from AYB then from anyone else... "You got spam"

HitScan

Sat Oct 13 19:06:36 2001

I've thought many times about recording myself saying "You've got Spam" in a near perfect imitation of the AOL guy, but then I think to myself, would it not be more productive to cut myself? and then I do neither.
HitScan

Sat Oct 13 19:08:59 2001

Besides, I'd have to go back to AOL for that, and I'd rather have a barrel full of ferrets munch on Hitscan Pensu Du'Jour than do that again.

Finding a friend with AOL is also out of the question, as I would ph34r contamination of some sort. Worse than cooties, even.
