I have reached a conclusion.

And so let it be remembered that in the year 2001 A.D. HitScan got sometnhing through his thick head. No driver ever written by ATI, Inc. will ever be worth a damn. Not in the past, Not now, Not ever.

Those who remember my gushing post about how happy I was to see my box working again may be surprised to hear this. Let us just say that "upgrading" an ATI driver is less like getting a new and improved piece of code, and is more like the fire ants moving on from the stump that was your left leg to the area that will soon be what used to be your gonads. Oh Sure, now I can check my hotmail in IE, whoop de doo, But shuold I get to adventurous in VB or dare to open WMP, it's fuckage city.

The only way to alieviate this terrible pain is to set the hardware acceleration level of the driver to absolutely nothing. So, In effect, I'm using a VGA card with the fat mem and 32bit color. I dare not try messing with my games (mostly because they've not yet been reinstalled, but hey) and I ph34r for my desktop performance, but, this shall have to serve me until I see that ATI has released the 8500 with utterly wintacular XP drivers, or until the day that hell itself rises and takes hold of the earth, whichever may come first. (Hint, I'm looking for a place with a nice view for my daily flesh rending)

In the defense of ATI:

The Radeon VE sucks.

Apart of that, HitScan is using beta drivers in a to-be released OS.

ATI are shit. Their cards are OK, but their drivers are woeful bags of hell and their support is a stuffed badger with a lava lamp.  How they can even exist in the same reailty as NVIDIA without bursting into flames from sheer shame defies logic.

But at least they're not as bad as 3DFX.

I came to that realization a long time ago, even though I've never owned any ATI products. :)

Riso: true, they are beta drivers, which happen to work far far better than the intended drivers.
Yes, the VE sucks, but I don't want to get another 64MB DDR when the 8500s will be out soon enough. (though I may have no choice, as the next opint may not wait)

XWindows doesn't want to work with the VE. This blows, as I really liked using KDE 2 in NetBSD. I don't think I can wait for the 8500s, and certainly not for the 8500 X drivers.

Which is another thing, the drivers in X never ever ever crashed on me. Shit, X stuff is more or less BSD licensed, so if they'd just take that for the 2-D I'd be set! It's bound to work better than the 50-monkeys-at-50-computers approach they're using now!

As for nVidia, I will not use anything they make. Unless of course they decide to play nice with the free unix OSes. I also still hate them for Be, even though it would have died with or without them.

Go get an Elsa GeForce 2 MX. Cheap, and pretty good.

In the stock drivers on my ATI card, I cant do cinbench at more than 640x480

With the new drivers, BGII locks the system every half an hour.

Nope. Still waiting on them to "do the right thing" with reguards to Linux/BSD/etc. I either want some specs out there so people can write up their own, or the source to their own out so someone can mess with that.  I see neither in the near future. I may investigate a Kyro chip, or a Matrox though. For some reason though I think I heard some disappointing things about Matrox and Win2K and above... Have to check I suppose.

3dfx cards+drivers were always top-notch.

The main problem they had was executing.

Oh, if you missed it, crapidia toutes FSAA as the new coming of christ.

And before they said "Such a BS. Noone needs it" when 3dfx had it.

Crapidia can suck MY hairy balls.

I WILL NEVER BUY A GODDAMN CRAPIDIA CARD.#

DO YOU HEAR ME NVIDIOTS? YOU CAN SUCK MY BALLS TOO!

You lost me, Mr. Hill. I don't get it at all.

Damn funny, though.
