Now how do you like MY new sig, huh? I think it's probably among the most sigtacular of them all.

Thank you, Caesar. They who readeth thy Battlefront salute thee.

Mon dieu! Vous ne savez pas le francais? Zut alors! Vous etes stupide.

:biggrin: Relax, OW. I know (or hope) you're joking and I know I'm only joking. But in answer to your question, it's obviously French. Unfortunately, I lack knowledge of how to make the special accents with an English-lanugage default keyboard setup.

AllYorBaseRBelong2Us

Tue Oct 2 06:54:14 2001

I too wish I knew how to make the strange accents.

For it appears that Mystic Grey, the Illusionist of Fate, yea even the Masta' of all that is Sucktacula' known to us as the Original Imitation Gruel, does in fact speak Francoise.

And I need practice as I scored a measly 67 on my Beginning French exam.

:biggrin: :biggrin: :biggrin: :biggrin: :biggrin:

It's posts like that which make me realize just how many nicknames I have.

But, it's true. I do in fact speak French; however my French is rusty because it has been well over a decade since I lived in France and I was just a child when I left. In the United States, the only places I can think of where French would be particularly useful is if you were either studying it in school, or if you lived in Louisiana.

I am studying it in school, but I have no particular desire to ever live in Louisiana if I can help it. As a matter of fact, I don't desire to live in Texas much past my college graduation, if at all. I've considered moving back to Chicago; although I wouldn't go back to the same suburb -- too many painful memories.

Alt+192 through 154
OscarWilde

Tue Oct 2 09:32:09 2001

ah fut! vc beat me to it! you can also use the charcater map,
start->systemtools->character map.
click on a character and you'll get the keystroke combinations to get the accented charcters.
I think on the pc you can also just hit the alt key in combination with the regular keyboard characters which will do the same as alt+163 etc.

like atl+2 == ™
on the mac standard american enlgish keyboard setting:
alt+d == ?
alt+w==<sum>
etc., etc.,
And if you change the fonts the combinations give you different characters with regards to the font. Same applies to the pc.

oh and yes i was joking about the language thing.
Off course i knew it was russian

vc

Tue Oct 2 14:46:08 2001

On PCs for acute accents on vowels, just go ctrl-alt-letter:
áéíóú

Apple-option-k (or g?) gives an apple logo in the system fonts. Interestingly, Photoshop won't let you type that in any of it's text making tools :)

OW: nope, doesn't work like that on PCs.  Alt is the Menu activation key, so Alt+w = Window Menu. It's one of the things I dislike about macs, Sometimes I just want to use the keyboard. The only thing in Windows that can't be done with the KB are the toolbars (which according to the interface guidlines are supposed to be dups of regular menu things) and tray items, which luckily don't require all that much fooling with :D

It's one of the things I dislike about macs, Sometimes I just want to use the keyboard.
:confused:
we have the "command" key which does the same thing via keyboard.

Which reminds me, whats the key command for a new folder in windows? I really need to know this. I'm sick of the clicking and then selecting new folder.

When i'm in the finder, i just command-n for a new folder. And the same command-n opens up a new window in any foreground app for macs.
Hmmmm.... i just thought of something. What ever the new command for opening a new window on the pc might do the trick and create a new folder in explorer.... don't have access to a pc at the moment.
i'm at home on my mac.

OscarWilde

Tue Oct 2 16:47:04 2001

oh and these are the some of the commands for using IE via the keyboard:
command-n == new window
command-o == open file
command-l == open location
command-w == close
command-s == save as
command-p == print
command-x or -c or -v == cut or copy or paste
command-a ==select all
command-f == find
command-g == find again
command-[ == go backwards
command-] == forwards
command-d ==add page to favorites
command-u == update subscriptions
command-m == minimize window
command-~ == cycle through windows ( I LIKE THIS COMMAND!!!)
command-; == preferences
command-h == hide explorer
command - q == quit explorer

These are just most of the commands that you're given to access most of the menu. Then there are some other commands that manipulate stuff but can't through the menu (or as easily with the mouse).

I guess maybe i misunderstanding you because i don't really know what you're talking about. If its the stuff i just pointed out above then thats odd since its all right there in the menu, even in the "classic" Mac OS?
The few things that got implemented later was the command-tab stuff.
I just found out in an OS X thread at arstechnica that I can command-tab and command-shift through apps. woot!
command-tab is moving right, and command-shift is moving left through the running app icons.
I still like the windows way of alt-tabbing through the recently used apps first versus just going through the list in a fixed order.

Well that is most sucktacular indeed. You sure?
It would make life a lot easier.
Right now i need to create a few folders, some nested within each other. Its for some stuff at work which would take some effort to explain. At 1:21 in the morning, that effort just ain't gonna wanna make the effort.

OscarWilde

Tue Oct 2 17:37:47 2001

heh!

now that is a fucking good idea!

well the good news is that the command prompt is a tad better in win2k then what they did with the command prompt in Windows NT

if ya don't what i'm talking about then you obviously don't use the command prompt at all....

I didn't know it was there, by the time I got back to this thread it was you and Riso on page 2 :tounge:
I didn't know that. when you press command does a menu hilight allowing you to use the arrows for movement or do you need to know all these command shortcuts? I've no access to a Mac for a while.

As for a New Folder button, I don't believe there's such a thing specifically. I normally use the mouse when I'm saving stuff :biggrin:

Luckily, if I should acquire a hard drive from Ebay I may soon have a full-time Performa 5200CD up and running here. I even have a SCSI-Ethernet converter. That's like l33t on a stick or something :cheesy:

OscarWilde

Wed Oct 3 04:11:30 2001

when you press command does a menu hilight allowing you to use the arrows for movement or do you need to know all these command shortcuts?

oh. Good point. Thats somewhat trivial because first of all intially you may not know the commands but your muscle memory over time improves and second of all the GUI/HI is mostly consistent app to app so in general most combinations work in all the apps. Granted they may not do exactly the same thing, i.e.
command + n open a new window in Internet Explorer, or opens up a new document in Word in which you would expect in the finder that the same command would open up a new window but it doesn't.
Anyhow, the macs had these keyboard commands from the get go.
The command -x,c,v first appeared on the mac too. Well not from Apple them selves, but if i remember correctly it came from some text editor app. Which Apple then integrated into their OS eventually. Windows then followed suit, i think for the same reason.
it would be more intuitive to have command-p for paste, command-c for copy, but then you're stuck with cut. yet i think its brilliant that the original designers went with the x,c,v keys because they are all close to each other which is the first good thing. Second the keys are also close to the command key, another great thing. Just need your thumb on the command key and then hit the x,c,v keys with your relative fingers.
To me x is like a scissor. C is just the c in copy. V is like a tip of a glue stick or like the direction in which you're pushing down, like pasting something.
very clever no?
:)

vc

Wed Oct 3 08:03:48 2001

Yeah. I like how on the PC you have Control for Copy, Shift for Shifting (moving) and Control-Shift for Create Shortcut though.
HitScan

Wed Oct 3 13:06:01 2001

I uh, think that C is for copy and X and V just happeneded to be lucky enough to be next to C, riding on her talents into a place in the computing hall of fame that neither of them earned :biggrin:

and as for that memory thing, Somebody said "Why bother filling your brain with a lot of worthless information that can just as easily be looked up in a book?" Or something like that. And yes, I'd have to look up who said it :biggrin:
